Tatters

Fall tatters the body of summer
with endless flaking, leaves drifting

like dandruff, eyelash, fingernail
the replicable cells, dura, cambium

petals on the stem in August
and in the culvert beside the freeway

by November, Fall picks us clean,
sends us naked into winter.
